Coming Trends in Marketing Technology

As Twitter and Facebook become more established as marketing platforms, other technologies with marketing potential will be introduced. Mitch Wagner on the CMO Site take a look at new technologies and trends that will continue to effect the way marketing on the Internet is done.

Location-based services are currently among the fastest growing technologies and their marketing potential is obvious. Foursquare, Gowalla and Facebook Places all connect repeat customers with deals at local businesses. Groupon plans to expand into this space as well. CheckPoints offers a way to accumulate spendable points via location checkins.

Quora and other online knowledge markets offer deeper connections than Facebook and Twitter. Marketers can participate in these forums and demonstrate the value of their products/services.

Other technologies are further out. Social networks in the future will be more decentralized. For marketers to pull useful information from them, better information mining will be necessary. Additional trends include personal monetization of social recommendations and instant machine language translation. Almost any social media technology has marketing potential.
