By Chandler Austin on Thu,Mar 22, 2012 @ 10:00 AM

According to Paul Gillin on the CMO Site, a lot of companies fail at the most basic level of digital marketing, search engine optimization (SEO). Here are five common SEO mistakes companies make, most of which can be rectified with small expenditures.

Poor or Nonexistent Keyword Strategy
SEO starts with having a list of 10-15 keywords you want to own. Focus on words customers might use to find you or problems they are trying to solve.

Bad Page Titles and Meta Descriptions
Page titles and descriptions play a big role in SEO. Use specifics when labeling. Include your keywords in descriptions. However, tagging your page with meta keywords may tip off competitors to your keyword strategy.

Squandered Media
Search engines can't make sense of media files unless you label them with an "alt" tag. Again, use your keywords You can also tag hyperlinks with your keywords.

PDFs from Hell
Search engines can read PDF files, but often, they haven't been properly titled or described. As with other Web pages, fill out the meta description fields.

Failure to Link
The more inbound links you have from quality sources, the better, so at the very least, link to your business website from other sites you control. You can create quality links from employee blogs, speaker bios and LinkedIn profiles. Reach out to your constituents and ask for links, and return the favor.

On-page Optimization

By Chandler Austin on Tue,Jul 12, 2011 @ 10:00 AM

Search engine optimization is far more complex than it was a decade ago. And on-page optimization forms an integral part of SEO. From BloggingPro, here are "Do's" and "Dont's" of on-page optimization.

DO's
  1. Using Images - Using images helps in optimization. Use a related image and include your keyword in the "alt" attribute.
  2. External Links - Don't us a large number of outbound links. However, outbound links to authority sites is helpful in rankings.
  3. Placement in H1 and Title Tags - Include your keyword in the single title and H1 tag. Limit the length of the title and H1 tags.
  4. Keyword Emphasis - Bold, italicize or underline the targeted keyword to add emphasis to the keyword in the eyes of search engines.
  5. Use of Meta Description - Do not leave the meta-description blank. Use it to address the targeted keyword.

DONT's
  1. Keyword Stuffing - Multiple repetitions may be seen as an attempt to manipulate rankings. You risk getting your site penalized by search engines.
  2. H1 Tags - An article should have a single (not multiple) H1 tag, ideally using your keyword.
  3. Meta Keywords - Meta keyword use has been devalued by search engines. They don't benefit the site in any way, and may allow competitors to find out the keywords you are targeting.
  4. Excessive Internal Links - Having some internal links is good, but too many dilute the authority of a given page.
  5. Avoid Multiple Page Title Elements - Don't use multiple page title elements on a single web-page.
