Social Media Trends for 2012

Posted on Tue,Dec 20, 2011 @ 10:00 AM

From Stephanie Schwab at Social Media Explorer, here are five social media trends for 2012 that marketers should know.

Content Marketing
Content Marketing has been around, but in 2012, it will become mainstream, as more CEOs understand that blogs and video can boost SEO and generate leads.

Social Media Influence
Social influence ranking tools will see broad adoption, though not perfection. A disconnect between online and offline influence will continue to exist.

Convergence of Marketing, Technology, Data
Expect the emergence of new positions, like “Marketing Technologist” and “Marketing Scientist”. Marketers will take technology into their own hands.

Legal Challenges Within Social Media
The FTC will need new guidelines to ensure proper identity disclosure and compliance with FTC and state guidelines.

Social Security
Insurance companies and law enforcement already draw on social networking information. New concerns will emerge about the usage of your personal, social information.

Trends in Social Media

Posted on Tue,Nov 22, 2011 @ 10:00 AM

Social media guru Jeff Bullas predicts some trends in the field on his blog.

"Social Mobile"
Smart phones with high speed Internet have altered society. Facebook and Twitter apps let people interact with their social networks from anywhere.

"Socialization of Search"
Increasingly, Google and Bing take social networks into account (social signals) when tweaking their search algorithms.

"Geo-Targeting of Social Media Marketing"
Smart phones also allow for local "check-in" applications like FourSquare and Google Places. Location-based marketing is now possible.

"Social Commerce"
You can now shop on social networks like Facebook without leaving the site.

"Social Gaming"
Easy to use games integrated into social networks have started to generate significant revenue from casual players.

"Global Magazine Super Blogs"
Traditional print media, and their online presences, receive far less traffic than global blogs like the Huffington Post. Blogs on a variety of topics attract millions of readers each month.

"Global Micro Niche Business"
Geography, technology and distance no longer restrict niche industries, which can now become multi-million dollar businesses. Even more so than the Internet, social networks enable this success.

Jeff Bullas has posted ten marketing insights from a recent study by Nielsen on social media and blogging.

  • The majority of visitors to social networks and blogs are female and are aged 18-34.
  • Women are in the majority of visitors to eight of the top 10 social networks. The notable exception is LinkedIn, largely due to the greater number of men in management roles.
  • Facebook has the most unique visitors per month, by a large margin.
  • Facebook (140.336 million)
  • Blogger (50.055 million)
  • Twitter (23.617 million)
